Walter Winkopp and Helen May ("Maude") Catoggio were married February 25, 1918. The Winkopp heritage is German. Joest Wennkauff is the earliest known ancestor on the Winkopp side, born in 1550. All descendants until Walter Winkopp were born in Germany. Franz Josef Alfred Winkopp emigrated to Williamsburg in 1868. The name changed many times over the years. The direct Winkopp line is: Walter Michael Windsor, Walter Winkopp, Franz Josef Alfred Winkopp, Adolf Winkopp, Peter Adolf Winkopp, Sigismund Ignatius Wincopp, Wilhelm Heinrich Wincop, Johann Mathias Wincop, Joducus Wincop, Johan Wynkops, Joest Wennkauff. Walter Winkopp’s mother, Caroline Blumlein, was born January 22, 1859 in Brooklyn, New York. Her father, John Christian Blumlein, was born in Freinsheim, Germany in 1819; he emigrated to New York in 1842. So, Walter Michael Windsor’s paternal great grandparents both emigrated to the US from Germany. Walter Winkopp was a vaudeville performer and theatrical producer. In his early days in vaudeville in the 1920's, his act was due to play a theatre in The Bronx, New York, and the fellow putting up the “billing” complained that Winkopp was not a suitable name and should be changed. Big Walter looked up at the marquee and saw the name of the emporium was Windsor Theatre, and he liked the name "Windsor." Then and there he became known as Walter Windsor. Big Walter never had his name changed legally. But in 1946, his son had his name legally changed to Walter Michael Windsor. Walter Michael Windsor married Mary Garnett Johnson on November 29, 1947. William Michael Windsor is the first of four children born to Walter Michael Windsor and Marfy Garnett Johnson. |
