On November 22, 1918, a son was born to Helen May ("Maude") Catoggio and Walter Winkopp. His name was Walter Michael Windsor, and he was a special man. He died on February 29, 2008. Walt had four children -- very proud members of the Catoggio family. Maude Catoggio died at the age of 20 when her only son, Walt, was just two years old. Walt was unsuccessful in tracing his roots, but his third child, Wendy May Windsor Harper, has done an exceptional job researching the Catoggio genealogy. She has been able to establish that many people were related as Catoggios who never knew they were. The Catoggio.com web site is dedicated to all ancestors and descendants of the Catoggio extended family tree. We have placed every photo that the Windsor family has of any Catoggios on this web site. If you will share information about Catoggios and photos, we would be delighted to add them. Wendy, the Catoggio historian, will be adding the complete genealogy work that she has done to the site for the benefit of everyone everywhere interested in Catoggios. To be precise, we haven't put EVERY photo of a Catoggio on the site, as we have a separate web site for our father, www.walterwindsor.com. He was a singer, songwriter, author, radio announcer, TV host, actor, writer, journalist, music librarian, musician, director, radio station manager, television station manager, music historian, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and we have many hundreds of photos of him as well as his autobiography on his web site. So, this site begins with Walter Michael Windsor (born Walter Winkopp) and his mother Helen May ("Maude") Catoggio. See the pages on Cattogio Family Links, Ancestors, Descendants, and Catoggio Photos. We will add information on other Catoggios as it is received. We hope you enjoy learning
more about the Catoggios here on

How Wendy May Windsor Harper managed to uncover Catoggio mysteries: "I started it when Dad turned 80 and told me sorrowfully that he thought now that he wouldn't ever find his Italian roots. I decided I would just try and see what I could come up with. I wrote a letter giving what little clues I had and sent it to every Catoggio in the world that I found through international directories on the internet. I had a friend from Italy who translated it into Italian for me for the ones that went to Italy. Then I was lucky enough that Giuseppe Bavuso wrote back and told me he was the grandson of Michele's brother. It was one of those "Kunta Kinte moments," and from then on, I was totally into the family history." Francesco Catoggio is the earliest known ancestor on the Catoggio side, born between 1690 and 1720 in Armento, Italy. Michele Catoggio emigrated to New York from Italy in 1883. Helen May Catoggio’s mother, Clara Wilhlmina Ritter, was born in Attenberg, Germany on January 22, 1875; she emigrated to New York in 1883. Michele and Clara had three children, including Helen May ("Maude") Catoggio. "Maude" died December 13, 1920 in Died at 356 Evergreen Terrace in Brooklyn, New York. |
